Fritter & Fry provide two levels of editing – copyediting and proofreading. To help you select the appropriate level of service, we have summarised the tasks performed in each level of service below.

Copyediting is a more comprehensive edit than proofreading. The tasks typically performed during copy editing include:

  • Checking for appropriate use of language, e.g. grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation and clarity of expression
  • Establishing and applying a house style to ensure consistency in language, terminology, spelling, capitalisation, hyphenation, abbreviations, expression of numbers and quantitative data, and references
  • Checking accuracy and completeness of cross-references.

Proofreading is performed after the manuscript has been prepared for publication. The tasks typically performed during proofreading include:

  • Ensuring completeness of manuscript
  • Checking for spelling, typographical and punctuation errors, wordbreaks at ends of lines, and accurate cross-referencing
  • Ensuring manuscript conforms to house style
  • Eliminating any formatting errors, e.g. widows, orphans or rivers.
